Elephants Help Conserve too……

Strange Statement, Isn’t?. Not any More. An elephant orphanage has just struck a wonderful solution to a messy problem.

An Adult elephant roughly produces about 180 Kg of waste a day. Then imagine the case of the Pinnawela Elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka which houses more than 60 Elephants.

It has been discovered by the team of Indian Journalists from Hyderabad that each adult elephant helps to produce One hundred and Fifteen (115) sheets of paper a day!! Amazing, isn’t it? The paper made out of Elephant Dung has a similar texture to that of handmade paper. This paper is used to make Name cards, Calendars, Drawing paper, albums, decorative boxes and anything that goes down in memory.

The main reason for this effective dung- paper is the poor digestive system of these jumbos. These poor animals leave up to 50% of their meal undigested. Hence the dung is rich in fiber and very essential.

The processes involved are washing the dung to remove bacteria, Boiling, bleaching, adding colour—if necessary and drying. This is just flattened into thin sheets of paper and to some of your preconceptions NO!! This dung does not stink at all and is 100% Bacteria free.

It is a two in one purpose. These poor innocent elephants help save trees and hence conserve the environment. Also. The orphanage receives a lot of money from the sales and this money is used for their care and better. Also, Visitors who visit this elephant orphanage, Who are plenty never leave without buying at least few of these elephant dung Stationery.

Finally, a Simple Eco- Friendly solution for a messy problem Hats off to India!! Now they help conserve too !!
